Introduction to Pest and Weed Control

After completion of this course, the participant would be able to:

  1. Scout for, identify and describe common pests, diseases and weeds found in a nursery or landscape.
  2. Identify, describe, and apply best pest, disease and weed control practices in a nursery or landscape.

It is important to note that the intention of this training is not to give participants a PCO number nor accreditation towards PCO registration as this is an introduction to pest and weed control.

The complete course will involve attending two sessions for each block. Three blocks will be run this year as follows:

Team Leader

The purpose of this course is to prepare the learner to operate as an Ornamental Horticultural Team Leader. Ornamental Horticulture Team Leaders work as productive members of a team and lead it in ornamental plant propagation nurseries, cut flower farms or gardens and landscapes to propagate, establish, cultivate, and maintain ornamental plants ensuring quality and aesthetic appeal.

Two blocks will be offered this year. The complete course will involve attending THREE sessions on the following dates:

The total cost per learner is R907.50 (excl. VAT) for the course.

We will go over principles, approaches, and tools that concentrate on the skills required by team leaders to operate as such. The three key areas are:

  • Leading teams in an ornamental plant production nursery, cut flower farms or landscapes and gardens.
  • Monitor team activities to ensure occupational health, safety, quality, and environment procedures are applied.
  • Monitor team activities to ensure ornamental plant propagation, establishment, cultivation, and maintenance practices are applied.

Ornamental Horticultural Supervisor

Based on the demand for this training opportunity in the past and the feedback received from those participating, SAGIC has decided to run this course again!

The complete course will involve attending SIX sessions starting on 6 March.

Registration closing on 16 February 2024.

Only one course will be offered this year. We will go over principles, approaches, and tools that concentrate on the six disciplines of supervising others within your unique organisational structure. The key areas are:

  1. Understanding a supervisor’s role in your organization
  2. Communicating as a supervisor
  • Training and coaching of team members
  1. Productivity, motivation, and performance
  2. Understanding interpersonal relations
  3. Developing and implementing the weekly plan

The total cost per learner is R1815.00 (excl VAT) for the full course.

A compulsory briefing session for mentors will be held on 28 February 2024 via zoom starting at 14:00.

General Requirements

The requirements are as follows:

  • Learners are to have a mentor that also attends each session. Guidelines for Mentors can be found on our website.
  • All sessions will be via Zoom and start punctually at 14:00 for a period of two-hours.
  • The session is short, focused, and to the point, dealing with only actual on the job experiences!
  • All notes and worksheets will be sent after the session which will enable the learner to internalize and practice what has been dealt with – remember that practice makes perfect!
  • Learners are to attend sessions and complete ALL the workplace experience worksheets in order to receive a certificate of attendance.
  • The Full Course fees are payable in advance and are non-refundable.
